Initial Heuristic Usability Testing & Testing Instrument Development

High Monkey Consulting has extensive experience in the usability field. Virgil Carroll, HMC's President, is a well known speaker in the area of usability, including recent speaking engagements on the field of usability at the Minnesota Government IT Symposium. HMC's expertise addresses our client's usability issues by developing the project specific tools and testing necessary to measure usability against five key quality components (heuristics), which are as follows:

Learnability: How easy is it for users to accomplish basic tasks the first time they encounter the design?

Efficiency: Once users have learned the design, how quickly can they perform tasks?

Memorability: When users return to the design after a period of not using it, how easily can they reestablish proficiency?

Errors: How many errors do users make, how severe are these errors, and how easily can they recover from the errors?

Satisfaction: How pleasant is it to use the design?

High Monkey Consulting uses Morae Customer User Experience software to provide usability testing services. Morae allows the HMC staff to record its usability testing sessions including computer screen recording, facial reactions, mouse clicks and keystrokes. This allows the testing proctor to focus on providing an accurate, comfortable testing environment for the testing process, instead of needing to focus on note taking and research gathering. Our software also provides for outside spectators to view the testing process remotely over the Internet and 'tag' specific segments of the recording in real-time and provide notes. At the end of a testing round, HMC provides a highlight video for viewing by our client's staff on its usability testing findings along with its written usability report. HMC has utilized the Morae software platform for 3 years.
