Choose to Reuse Website case study header

Choose to Reuse Website

Choose To Reuse is a program that is a part of Hennepin County Environmental Services. The mission of Choose To Reuse is to help residents live sustainably by reducing waste, saving natural resources, conserving energy, preventing pollution, and saving money. Choose to Reuse helps people keep usable items out of the trash and obtain quality items without buying new by providing resources to sell, donate, buy, repair, and rent goods that may otherwise be thrown away.

In 2013, High Monkey began a long-term consulting relationship with Hennepin County.  The primary objective of that consulting agreement included the rebuilding of all Hennepin County public facing websites.  High Monkey provides expertise in the Sitecore CMS platform to the County and is leveraging Sitecore to provide a centrally managed CMS environment while using common design elements and standardized templates for County websites – all while allowing for unique branding for each County website.  High Monkey also implemented the Coveo Search platform – another standard used for all Hennepin County public-facing websites.  High Monkey worked closely on this project with another of the County’s consulting providers, Minneapolis-based Azul7.  The creative team at Azul7 provided the design theme, graphical elements, HTML, and CSS while High Monkey delivered the Sitecore build, Coveo search implementation, functional and compliance testing, and implementation expertise.

In the Spring of 2015, High Monkey began work with the County on the Choose to Reuse site. Choose to Reuse is a public-facing website that allows consumers to browse businesses that buy and sell used goods and also offers recycling services. The existing website had an outdated style, was difficult to navigate, and the search functionality was slow. The Choose to Reuse website required a re-design that would encourage recycling and re-use of goods in Hennepin County. The primary goals of this site re-design and re-build:

  • Create a responsive site for use on multiple devices
  • Layout and build a site that is easy for Hennepin County employees to use, update, and manage
  • Focus on easy-to-use interface that allows end users to search businesses and services
  • Integrate Google Maps to show where businesses are in an interactive map
  • Allow businesses to submit their own information through forms to be listed on Choose to Reuse
  • Integrate Google Places ID’s to get info such as business name, hours, and website
  • Update the design (provided by Azul7) within HC branding guidelines to create an aesthetic that is recognizable as a Hennepin County site

Throughout the process of the re-design and re-build, several challenges needed to be addressed. These included:

  • Performance of the site – Search results to be delivered quickly
  • The site needed to be as efficient as possible
  • Integration of Google Maps and Google Places ID
  • The ability to create a business listing dynamically within Sitecore CMS based off form submitted by website visitors. This required customization so that once a form was submitted the information would be queued within the Sitecore CMS platform allowing for review and approval by a Hennepin County content editor before being added to site.
