Stupid Usability #7

2 ply’s too many!

From the mind of Jill Arrigoni, Project Manager at High Monkey:

After installing my new toilet paper roll holder I set out to add the first roll of paper. To my surprise the standard roll was too big and there was not enough space from the wall to the roll holder. Well, now what…tear it out and patch the holes and buy a new holder? Leave the roll on the floor and give up?

What should be an absolute no-brainer, often I find vendors (such as the paper and holder manufacturers) don’t get together an compare notes, which make life much more difficult for us humans who use their products. Much like two digital devices that everyone now expects to sync and talk with one another, people should expect the same out of the day-to-day items we all take for granite. How often are we sent to the store aisles trying to find that exact right fit for something we already have?

With a little bit of requirements gathering, a tape-measure and some usability testing this problem could have been avoided. Yes, it looked pretty, but functionality is just as important.
