Access Services and SQLLocalDB

(From the mind of Peter Serzo, Previously VP of Consulting Services at High Monkey)

My customer correctly "asked" me, "Why do I have to install SQL Express, a Database on my two WFE's! That is too much exposure"

My response of, "the whitepaper says we have to," just didn't cut it. I couldn't even answer what it was for. So I reached out to an expert at Microsoft for the answer - Kevin Bell - of the Access Services team. He has been doing a lot of talks at SPUGs and I was lucky to catch him at one.

He answered me very promptly, which I am grateful for. Here is the answer.

  1. SQLLocalDB is loaded on the application server, not the WFE.
  2. SQLLocalDB does not contain any storage - it is used for query processing. It uses a different IIS process and is not accessible externally. Local DB is used to have connectivity to external data. Therefore, if you don't install it - everything will still work except...except for external data to SharePoint Lists.

So once again, Thank you to Kevin - I hope you all find this information useful!
