SharePoint 2013 Suite Bar Newsfeed Modification

(From the mind of Peter Serzo, Previously VP of Consulting Services at High Monkey)

The Suite Bar is anything but sweet.  One would think that there would be an easy method to modify the links on this component.  But, Only through Powershell and server side code you can modify the Suite Bar to add and modify the items that appear.  And as always - there is a third alternative.

I needed to do this for a customer and was able to add an item(s), see my Customize the SharePoint 2013 Suite Bar!  But I also wanted to change a few items.  The first one is the Newsfeed name.

No judgement on why it is called Newsfeed.  But my customer wanted it change to "My Portal".  Searching high and low I could not find an easy way to change this.  Enter jQuery.  Here it is:

$("#suiteLinksBox span:contains('Newsfeed')").html("My Portal");

Yes, that is it.  Quick - easy - one line.  Of course I follow my best practice and have a .js file and place that in my master page.

Well, since that is so simple (aka short) I have one other modification.  The SharePoint on the upper left of the suite bar.  Nice advertising for Microsoft but this is a internal portal.  It is not appropriate.  It does not make the site more useable and if something goes wrong - I don't want people say SharePoint Sucks.  I want them channeling their comments and constructive feedback to the team implementing it.

As a general rule, a site should be built so that the technology is the enabler, as such it should be transparent to the user.  That means the site should be user friendly.  Bottom line, change the SharePoint word on the upper left.

To do that many folks have written this up via Powershell.  Here is the link:

Engage and have a great day!  I hope you feel this is helpful.
