Season 4 is here. In Season 3, Virgil and Cole spent every episode on AI. They found that many of the problems people blame on AI are not caused by AI at all - those problems already existed, and AI just made them easier to see. This season, the show covers the full range of digital work again, including AI, accessibility, user experience, content, search, and design.

Show Notes

Welcome to Season 4 of Discussing Stupid!

This podcast has always been about the same thing: the bad habits, lazy defaults, and inherited decisions that make digital work harder than it needs to be. Season 3 narrowed in on AI for a full run of episodes. This season we're back to the whole field.

That means accessibility, user experience, content, search, design, and the way organizations actually make decisions about all of it. Some episodes will be about things that have been broken for fifteen years and nobody has bothered to fix. Others will be about brand new mistakes people are making with very new tools. AI is still in the mix, but it's one topic among many instead of the whole map.

The format isn't changing - two people who do this work for a living, talking through what's going wrong and what to do instead. No theory for its own sake and absolutely no pretending there's a clean answer when there isn't one.

We've got a decent list of topics for this season going, but we'd love to hear what's driving you nuts as well in the digital world. Drop a comment on YouTube, hit us up on social, or use the contact form at highmonkey.com/podcast.

Also, in this trailer you'll hear a preview of our new theme music, written and produced by Cole.

Well, hi everybody, and welcome back to season four. Four. Four. Four. Wow, man.

>> COLE 0:11
I held up a five, my bad.

>> VIRGIL 0:12
Yeah, hahaha.

>> COLE 0:12
Four. Season four.

>> VIRGIL 0:14
Four. Four. Yeah. Five. Five. Five. Four, four, four. Yep. And that, so. Well, we're back for a new season and have some exciting things to share with you this year. Cole, what do we have going on?

>> COLE 0:26
Yeah, so quick rewind a bit. Season three was all about AI, or so we thought. It was called Intentional AI, that was the series we did all season three long, and we ended up learning that a lot of the stupid practices we see in AI aren't even about AI at all. They're stemming from bad practices that predate AI decades, really. It's all about going for a tool to solve a problem, or going kind of blindly trying to solve something without really examining your process. So we're kind of expanding on that in season four, across the board, beyond AI. We'll still talk about AI, you know, a bit here and there, but yeah.

>> VIRGIL 1:09
I mean, we've got a lot of exciting episodes. I mean, I'm excited about talking about some of the things like the new accessibility standards, WCAG 2.2, and how that's going to kind of affect organizations, what you need to see. And even though it's not mandated out there, it's something there. But we're also going to talk about AI and continue to kind of explore how you can use it intentionally and for specific purposes and things at work. And I know we're also going to talk about a few of my pet peeves out there in the world, like pop-ups and everything hitting you to get subscribers and that. Some of the things that are really affecting user experience that are things that have been around for a really long time, that we really need to think about, is that really what we want to do anymore? And then you and I have been talking about it, that the hype of design, and you know, like glassmorphism and all these kind of things that are kind of in hype, and look at a little bit of these design trends and see how much help they are and how much they're just a bunch of marketing fluff.

>> COLE 2:07
Yeah, well, clearly we have a good amount of topics that we want to cover here this season, but we're always open to topics that you want to hear. So feel free to send any ideas our way, whether it be a comment on YouTube, whether it be on social media, or just submit our contact form on highmonkey.com/podcast.

>> VIRGIL 2:28
Yeah, well, I definitely love a good idea, and one of our great ideas was kind of based off of last season. In that last season we added some new theme music. And in one of our episodes we mentioned Artlist, one of the AI vendors out there that do design and that kind of stuff. And it was kind of funny, because right after we mentioned them in that episode, we started getting copyright on our music that we used. And this was stuff that we had downloaded from a royalty-free site many years ago. And it ended up that Artlist had actually purchased this site and was now calling copyright on our music. So including ideas, we had the idea of using our resident music aficionado, Cole Schlotthauer, to write some original music for us. So stay tuned for episode one, when you're going to hear new intro and outro music by our one and only digital artist here.

>> COLE 3:22
Indeed. You know, had to combat the copyright situation in the most creative way possible. So how can I not?

>> VIRGIL 3:32
Well, I'm looking forward to it. And as a matter of fact, why don't we just give you a little taste right now.

[Music plays]

>> VIRGIL 3:51
I'm personally very excited about it. I like the new music. A little bit different vibe, a little bit more funk to it. I like that. And I think it's got some good things. So stay tuned for episode one to really hear about that.

>> COLE 4:02
I think it gets the people going into the episode. Yeah. But yeah, Discussing Stupid, it's brought to you by High Monkey. It's a digital consulting company. We talk about this stuff because we've lived it, and we help organizations all over the world deal with their stupid. Find us at highmonkey.com/podcast.

>> VIRGIL 4:22
And don't forget that you can watch the video version of this on YouTube, and now Apple Podcasts, because they've now released a video version in that, and Spotify. So if you want to watch the video version and see our pretty faces, you can do those. If you don't, remember that you can always listen to the audio versions on any of your favorite podcast players, or also Spotify and Apple Podcasts and SoundCloud and that. And if you want to keep up with things, you can subscribe to our newsletter at discussingstupid.com. Our first episode will launch on October 6th, so make sure to share this with others so that we can have them also listen to us discuss stupid.

Virgil and Cole close out the heart of Season 3 by looking back at the prompts used across the Intentional AI series. The conversation gets at something most AI content skips: the quality of a prompt comes from the clarity of thought behind it, not the technique used to write it.
